VALUATIONS
In every valuation confidentiality is assured, and is endorsed by Mark Medcalf’s long-standing reputation and the many recommendations and referrals from existing clients.
The service Mark provides is friendly, objective and wholly independent of any auction house which ensures impartiality.
An initial discussion will establish your valuation requirements and the options available to the client. This is followed by one or more visits to appraise and consider the objects, accompanied by any off-site research or specialist consultation as needed.
The itemised valuation report is delivered with a photographic record where required together with a certificate confirming the date, value and purpose of the report.
Mark Medcalf’s services are used and recommended by:
- Professional advisers, such as solicitors, accountants and insurance brokers.

We have advised private and corporate clients on behalf of Adam & Company, Hampden & Co., Lloyds HBOS and The Royal Bank of Scotland.
Museums, Corporate Collections and Institutions
We have been employed by a wide range of private companies, PLCs, museums, other institutions and local authorities to compile inventories and valuations of antiques and art in their possession, and
to advise them about managing and developing their collections.
Art collections are becoming increasingly popular as a way to demonstrate a company’s values while creating an interesting environment and are often an increasing asset. These need to be carefully managed to retain their value. In every case the service we provide is professional and discreet.
Costs for these services are calculated on a time basis.
Services for Private Clients
The process starts with a discussion of what is to be valued, and for what reasons. This is followed by one or more visits to inspect and photograph the items in question, additional research or specialist advice, if required, and the completion of a report. Two copies are provided, one illustrated with photographs. Fees are charged on a time basis, plus research costs and expenses where appropriate.
We recommend that valuations be carried out every 7 to 10 years; more frequently where the market is particularly volatile, with current examples such as Chinese and Eastern art, contemporary art and 20th century Scottish painting.
